Nature and Landscape

On the way to Höchstenbach, the Wied Trail passes through the Oberes Wiedtal nature reserve. It includes floodplain landscapes, wet meadows, and biotopes that provide habitats for many plant and animal species. From the village, the Wied Trail continues through the Im Dorm nature reserve, which is known for its diverse flora and fauna.

Culture and History

The church dating from the 13th century was renovated with LEADER funding. The General Marcau memorial was damaged and rebuilt several times.

Wied Trail and Routes

The Wied Trail includes a 16-kilometre, moderately difficult stage from Höchstenbach to Altenkirchen, which takes around five hours. From Höchstenbach, the route passes by Krambergsmühle.

Another stage from Linden to Höchstenbach passes by Dreifelder Weiher and follows its shore. Dreifelder Weiher is described as the largest body of water in the Westerwald Lake District. Swimming is possible at the lido of the Haus am See campsite; Dreifelder Weiher also offers the opportunity for a short boat trip.

The Tankstelle, Höchstenbach bus stop is located directly on the Wied Trail. Free parking for the Wied Trail is available at Höchstenbach Cemetery on Friedhofstraße.

On weekdays, bus route 420 runs from Hachenburg Markt to the Tankstelle, Höchstenbach bus stop; the journey takes around 14 minutes. For the return journey from Altenkirchen to Höchstenbach, bus route 255 can be used on weekdays. The return journey from Höchstenbach to Linden takes between 32 and 50 minutes in total on weekdays.
