Astert: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Astert is located within the Kroppach Switzerland Nature and Landscape Conservation Area. Here, the Große Nister forms a narrow valley with partly steep slopes.

Nature

The Kroppach Switzerland–Limbach circular route “Valley of the Große Nister” is a moderately difficult hike covering 15.8 kilometres, with 231 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 4.6 hours. The hike leads through deciduous forests into the valley of the Große Nister. It reaches Astert and then follows the Große Nister to just before Heuzert. Via the Hartenberg, it climbs to another viewpoint and leads back via the Lützelauer Mühle and the Heunigshöhlenpfad.

To start in Limbach, bus route 270 runs from Hachenburg to Streithausen; this is followed by an approximately 25-minute walk to Limbach. The route from Hachenburg to the starting point leads via the K19 through Müschenbach to Astert and then via the K20 to Limbach.

Astert has a barbecue hut and a youth camping site.

Cycling

The Nister Cycle Route is part of the Westerwald Loop from Wissen via the Kroppach Switzerland to Hachenburg and onward towards the Hoher Westerwald. It crosses the Kroppach Switzerland, where steep embankments and rocky landscapes lead to climbs from the valley up to the surrounding heights.

The WW1 Cycle Route leads south of Limbach to Astert and circles the Hohe Ley viewpoint. The WW1 Fuchskaute–Hachenburg Cycle Route is classified as moderately difficult and covers 50 kilometres.

Culture

The route includes the medieval Assberg slate mine. It also passes Marienstatt Abbey, whose basilica is early Gothic.
