The historic millstone caves are a visitor attraction in Hohenfels-Essingen. The Zähbasaltweg is a 7.1 km circular trail with a duration of 2 hours 25 minutes and 206 m of ascent and descent. It passes the millstone caves, including the named caves Schwedenfeste, Borussiahöhle and St.-Martin-Höhle, which visitors may explore at their own risk. Guided pony rides into the „Realm of Darkness“ are offered as a family activity.

Getting there

The municipality has road connections near the A1 and A48; from here, there are short routes to Gerolstein and Daun. Free parking is available at the Hohenfels-Essingen community center on Schulstraße/Auf Erd and at the forest car park on the Mühlenberg. Bus routes 700, 777 and 515 run from Gerolstein railway station/ZOB to Hohenfels, Gerolsteiner Straße.
