Duppach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Eichholzmaar between Steffeln and Duppach is a small, distinctly circular volcanic maar; two mineral springs are located in the adjacent valley area. Duppach lies both in the UNESCO Global Geopark Vulkaneifel and in the North Eifel Nature Park.

Nature

At the Duppacher Drees, a geological information panel explains the spring’s iron- and CO2-rich mineral water in German, English, and Dutch. It also displays the logo of the UNESCO Global Geopark Vulkaneifel.

Hiking

The “Volcanoes, Maars and Drees” geo-hiking trail is a moderately difficult circular route covering 20.9 kilometers, with a duration of approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes. Its two loops pass the Duppacher Drees, one of three iron-rich mineral springs. The Volcano Trail passes the Roman villa Duppach-Weihermühle and the dry maar Duppacher Weiher.

Getting Around

Bus route 542 runs from Lissendorf railway station to the church in Steffeln. Free parking is listed at the Duppach community center, Hauptstraße 36.

Culture and History

Duppach’s Catholic parish church is dedicated to St. Hubertus; the parish was first recorded in 846. The present St. Hubertus Church was built from 1923 to 1927, while the choir of the older church continues to be used as a cemetery chapel. In 1751, the church received a relic of St. Hubertus from the provost of Cologne Cathedral, Count Johann Karl Erb-Truchseß von Waldburg-Zeil.

Roman archaeological remains are located in Duppach-Weiermühle, including a necropolis as well as residential and farm buildings along the Roman road from Trier to Cologne. At the Knauf adventure forge, visitors can watch a blacksmith at work at an open forge.
