Culture and History

Welschbillig is associated with the remains of a Roman villa complex. It included an ornamental and rowing pond surrounded by 112 herms. Most of the recovered herm heads are displayed at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier. The complex was discovered during the construction of the parish church and described as unique north of the Alps.

The townscape also includes preserved elements of a medieval moated castle: the remains of the northwest tower, a gatehouse with two round towers, a stone bridge over the moat, sections of the former 1.5-kilometre-long town wall, as well as the church and the administrative building on the castle grounds. St Peter’s is a vaulted basilica built of yellow sandstone in neo-Gothic forms. It was erected on the site of the former castle in 1888–90. The former administrative building on the Welschbillig castle grounds is described as an early example of Baroque princely rural architecture and is now used as a rectory. The courtyard of the former moated castle also contains a red sandstone fountain dating from the 18th century.

On Helenenberg stands a Baroque church built in the 18th century. During the week, visitors can ask for access at the gate. The church has a star vault whose painted decoration bears the year 1518, as well as an ornately designed sacrament house dating from 1525. Its Baroque nave and Late Gothic choir are described as an outstanding example of Late Gothic architecture in the Trier region. Welschbillig also has an annual theatre tradition performed in the local dialect, Welschbilliger Platt.

Hiking and Landscape

The Spitolsweg is an 8-kilometre hiking trail that takes 2.5 hours and is easy to moderately difficult. It starts and ends at the car park by the Kultur- und Marktscheune in Welschbillig. The trail includes the rest area at the Nussbach, with a shelter, table, bench and a nearby barbecue area. The Spitolsweg also leads to the Geider Kreuz, where there is a shelter, seating and relaxation benches, as well as a view of Welschbillig’s town centre. Along the way, it passes the Baroque church on Helenenberg.

The Welschbillig–Schilzenburg hiking trail “Eine Spur echter”, No. 12, starts and ends at the Schilzenburg car park. Its highlight is a panoramic view from the Schilzenburg. The trail is one of the 20 uniformly signposted routes in the Trier-Land hiking concept.

The Falzerbach is described as a stream with a preserved original natural course. The stream is accessible; its character is described as wooded and almost primeval. The German-Luxembourg Way of St James also passes through Welschbillig on its route between Echternach and Perl. The Wellkyller Mill ensemble includes a chapel and a former mill building on the Kyll; it is described as scenically attractive and picturesque.
