Wincheringen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Wincheringen is where local history and winegrowing come together. In the Upper Moselle region, light shell-limestone soils are associated with Elbling and Pinot wines; these can be sampled at historic wineries, vinotheques, and modern wine producers.

Culture

The parish church of St. Peter in Wincheringen is a three-aisled neo-Gothic basilica built in 1883/84 according to plans by Reinhold Wirtz. The listed monument zone of the former moated castle and cemetery preserves a 15th-century defensive tower, a 16th-century manor house, and parts of the northern curtain wall.

Archaeologically, Wincheringen is associated with the discovery of the so-called “Rich Treverian Woman’s Grave” in 1936. The Helenenkreuz, a wayside cross dating from 1746 and renewed in 1810, stands along the old Roman road. The listed monument zone around Im Weissfeld, Trierer Straße, Warsbergerstraße, and Weinbergstraße preserves the characteristic streetscape of Wincheringen’s old eastern village edge, as well as the town’s 19th-century expansion with notable farmhouses.

The medieval round defensive tower is a local landmark and houses the village’s church bells; the cultural spaces in the Warsberg castle complex are opened for events. The former mill at Mühlenweg 3 is a building with a half-hipped roof dating from 1789, which was renovated in 1877.

Wine

Matthias Hild Winery is a fourth-generation family business specializing in Elbling. The grapes are harvested by hand, the vines are cultivated without herbicides or insecticides, and the winery offers wine tastings.

Michael Backendorf Winery has a long winemaking tradition and uses environmentally conscious cultivation methods. Wine tastings take place in the tasting room or wine cellar. The winery also explains aspects of winegrowing – from managing and tending the vineyards through harvesting and processing to winemaking in the cellar.

Hermann Schneider Winery produces wine, sparkling wine, and spirits on site. Burg Warsberg is its most important vineyard site; there, the slope and exposure to sunlight create suitable growing conditions for different grape varieties. The winery offers wine tastings for individuals and groups of up to 70 people and welcomes inquiries about vineyard walks and wine-related events.

Hiking

The vineyards of Gries Winery are located directly on the Moselle Trail in Wincheringen and among large shell-limestone cliffs in Nittel. The winery offers wine tastings for groups of 10 to 30 people. A refrigerated wine vending machine is described as a short stop on the Palzem–Nittel stage of the Moselle Trail.
