Nature

Newel’s landscape is ideal for hiking. The nearby Butzerbachtal valley is home to a Roman copper-mining complex and a quarry; the stone extracted there was used for the Porta Nigra in Trier. The Butzerbachtal nature and adventure trail forms part of the Eifelsteig.

The Premium Römerpfad is the best way to explore the sights of the Butzerbachtal valley. The area around Pützlöcher is accessible via Stage 15 of the Eifelsteig and the approximately 9-kilometre Premium Römerpfad circular hiking trail. The Römerpfad begins either at the car park below the ruins of Ramstein Castle in Kordel or at Ramsteiner Weg in Butzweiler; the latter starting point is closer to Pützlöcher.

Trier-Land also has a well-developed network of cycle paths and hiking trails. The Kylltal Cycle Path leads from the Eifel to the Moselle through meadows, forests and river floodplains.

Culture and History

Within the municipality of Newel, Putzlöcher is documented as a Roman copper mine and Roman quarry that was used from the second half of the 2nd century until the end of the 3rd century. In nearby Butzweiler stands the reconstructed Roman Long Wall, which was originally 72 kilometres long, 80 centimetres thick and 2 metres high.

There are six Roman settlement sites within the municipality of Newel. The Roman manor house in Newel was used from the end of the 1st or the 2nd century until the end of the 4th century and included a villa with a portico. Newel’s St. Clement branch church is a small post-Baroque hall church dating from 1806, with a walled churchyard.
