Landscape

The Saar-Riesling-Steig combines sunny vineyards, deciduous and coniferous forests, and idyllic stream valleys. The Geisberg high plateau offers panoramic views across the Saargau towards Luxembourg and Trier.

The Ockfener Bockstein is Ockfen’s most important vineyard site and also a local hill. Its Devonian clay slate contributes to the character of the area’s vineyards and to the wine’s mineral profile. The 53-hectare vineyard site lies directly above Ockfen next to the Ockfener Bach and is classified as a VDP Erste Lage.

The Bockstein rock can be reached from the car park at the Ockfen fishing pond by following the Saar-Riesling-Steig for about 1.5 kilometres. The Bockstein rock viewpoint looks out over Ockfen, Irsch, the vineyards and the Saar Valley towards Saarburg.

Wine

According to reports, Ockfen’s vineyards have been cultivated for around 2,000 years; a bronze-socketed axe found in a vineyard is cited as evidence. In 975, Ockfen was recorded among the possessions of the newly re-established St. Martin Monastery in Trier. A former administrative building of the monastery has been preserved and bears witness to Ockfen’s historical ties to St. Martin Monastery.

Ockfen is associated with wine tastings and wine hiking trails.
