Wehr lies directly on the Moselle and is surrounded by vineyards. On the Wehrer Rosenberg, terraced viticulture, limestone cliffs and diverse habitats come together. This means there are several different themes to explore during a stay: hiking trails, a via ferrata, viticulture, and traces of culture and history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wehr, you can choose where to stay based on whether you would mainly like to experience the landscape of the Rosenberg, the town’s history, or a mix of both.

Vineyard Terraces and Nature on the Rosenberg

The vineyard terraces of the Wehrer Rosenberg are closely interwoven with valuable biotopes. These include limestone cliffs, heat-loving shrubs and ravine forests. The Rosenberg is also home to habitats with orchids, reptiles and a rich variety of insects. The Wehrer Rosenberg hiking trail lies within the “Kalkwälder bei Palzem” FFH area, which is part of Natura 2000. The Wehrer Rosenberg was recognised as a focal area for biodiversity in 2020. Viticulture also shapes this part of the landscape: the Rosenberg is one of the few sites with terraced vineyards on the German side of the Moselle. Here, vineyard terraces and a variety of natural habitats are closely interwoven.

Hiking and Via Ferrata

The Wehrer Rosenberg premium hiking trail is 4.8 km long. This precise distance helps you fit the trail into your day’s plans. The Wehrer Rosenberg Moselsteig spur trail starts at the car park by the Wehr railway stop and returns there. This makes the same place both the starting point and the return point. A via ferrata also runs across steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces on the Wehrer Rosenberg. Its route offers another way to experience the terrain of the Rosenberg. Those interested in via ferratas will find a different activity here from the routes designated as hiking trails; the cliffs and narrow terraces mentioned shape the route.

Church, Fortification and Learning Trails

The restored altar of St Mark’s in Wehr is dated to 1721. Its central niche depicts the Madonna, with the Evangelists Mark and Luke at the sides; above them are Saint Nicholas and Saint Helena. At St Mark’s, the tower and choir of the old church are also incorporated into the new community hall built in 1964. Another trace of the past is the section rampart fortification near Wehr. It was a fortification on a spur-like promontory of the Muschelkalk plateau between the Helfanter Bach and the Moselle. Alongside the structural elements at St Mark’s, the plateau’s distinctive location is also part of the town’s history.

The Via Caliga’s first section leads to Wehr. A total of 24 information boards cover geological processes on the Upper Moselle, the Romans and viticulture. The topics therefore range from geology to cultural history and viticulture. The wines from the Wehrer Rosenberg also have their own distinctive profile: they have a characteristic flavour with a hint of rose fragrance.

Getting Here and an Excursion in the Region

Regional trains operating on the Wittlich–Trier–Perl route stop at Wehr (Mosel) station. If you are planning to travel by train, this route information is a useful point of reference. Further afield in the region, there is a different kind of excursion to enjoy: the 30-kilometre section “Steine am Fluss” of the Rhineland-Palatinate Sculpture Trail can be explored by bike as a day trip. This makes it a regional cycling destination, while the trails, vineyard terraces and cultural traces on the Wehrer Rosenberg define the local character.

When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Wehr, you can decide whether to focus on the Rosenberg with its trails and habitats, Wehr’s cultural history, or an additional cycling excursion further afield in the region.
