Landscape
A striking red sandstone cliff supports the ruins of Merzalben Castle. The Palatinate Forest Trail continues from Gräfenstein Castle to the Winschertkopf, a red sandstone rock formation above the Merzalben Valley. The Winschertfels viewpoint on the 521-meter-high Vorderer Winschertkopf offers views over Merzalben, Gräfenstein Castle, and the forests of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. It is freely accessible year-round and can be reached via the Palatinate Forest Trail; free parking is available at the Schäferei hiking car park. Animals that can be observed in the surrounding area include hares, roe deer, wild boar, red deer, and foxes.
Culture and History
The historic town center is home to the old parish church of St. Peter and Paul and, directly next to it, the newer Church of the Holy Cross. The ruins of Gräfenstein Castle still feature well-preserved walls, towers, and a castle courtyard. Gräfenstein Castle, also known as “Merzalben Castle,” is a castle ruin dating from the Hohenstaufen period and is located approximately two kilometers east of Merzalben. Its keep has a unique seven-sided shape in Germany, and the castle also offers panoramic views over the Palatinate Forest. Admission is free year-round; the steep path from the Schäferei hiking car park takes about ten minutes. Guided tours are offered at Gräfenstein.
Trails
Hiking and cycling trails maintained by the Palatinate Forest Association run through Merzalben. The town is located directly on Route 1 of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park, a route with a high proportion of single trails. Merzalben is also situated on the long-distance Palatinate Forest Trail. From the town center, this trail reaches Gräfenstein Castle after a short ascent. The approximately 46-kilometer Gräfenstein Region Cycling Route also leads to Merzalben, where Gräfenstein Castle can be visited.
