Nothweiler is connected to the cross-border UNESCO Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve. It is characterized by dense forests, sandstone cliffs, almost one hundred castles and castle ruins, streams and quiet forest ponds. Nothweiler has three signposted Nordic walking routes measuring 3.7, 6.7 and 9.7 kilometres. There are also several hundred kilometres of cross-border cycle paths towards Northern Alsace and the Southern Wine Route.
Hiking and Cycling
The approximately 7-kilometre Grenzgängerweg is a German-French premium hiking trail with information boards about the history of the border and the cross-border biosphere reserve. After completing the Grenzgängerweg, various types of tarte flambée are recommended at Nothweiler’s restaurants.
The 9.5-kilometre Four Castles Tour begins at the hiking car park at the end of Lembacher Straße in Nothweiler and leads to Wegelnburg, Hohenbourg, Löwenstein and Fleckenstein. The Nothweiler forest nature trail is open year-round. The approximately 2.5-kilometre themed trail has information boards about the forest and forest animals, as well as rest areas and viewpoints; the start and finish are at the car park by the Schützenhaus.
The 48-kilometre Peace Tour passes through Nothweiler and has an e-bike charging station there.
Culture and History
The Sankt Anna Stollen visitor mine includes a 420-metre-long underground tour. It showcases hand-worked ore mining, a deep shaft, an underground cistern, a ventilation shaft and illuminated iron-ore workings. The Sankt Anna Stollen information centre has a permanent exhibition on mining and iron processing in the Wasgau. However, the visitor mine and information centre have been closed since April 2025 for staffing reasons and are closed indefinitely.
The nearby Wegelnburg was built around 1200 and first mentioned in 1246. It is described as the highest castle in the Palatinate and offers panoramic views.
