Culture and History

Bettendorf lies on the western slopes of the Taunus. Its historic character is reflected in several preserved architectural and other historical features: At Miehlener Straße 7 stands a small half-timbered house from the 18th century, with a half-timbered barn and a garden dating from the 19th century. Near Altenborn 4, there is a cast-iron water fountain from the second half of the 19th century.

The Bettendorf Geological Open-Air Museum includes a private mineral collection. In the forest of neighboring Obertiefenbach, remains of a Roman watchtower have been preserved.

Bettendorf was first documented in the Merenberg Deed of Donation in 1163. Traces of Celtic settlements can be found within the municipality of Bettendorf, including a hill fort and several burial mounds. The Roman Limes ran northeast of Bettendorf and enclosed the area of present-day settlement.
