Culture

Ober Kostenz was first mentioned in 1220 in a property register of St. Maximin Abbey in Trier. There is also evidence of an early Roman settlement. The Protestant church in Ober Kostenz is dated to 1745. Its church tower was renovated in 1700, the nave was built in 1745–1746, and the wooden interior was renovated in 1890. The church also contains a Stumm organ dating from 1891.

Numerous carefully restored half-timbered houses shape the character of the village. In 1993, Ober Kostenz was named the most beautiful municipality in the Koblenz administrative district. Archaeological finds are also part of the village’s history: burials from the 1st century were excavated near Ober Kostenz in 1939 and 1949. A large prehistoric burial ground was likewise excavated near Ober Kostenz in 1939 and 1949, beside today’s district road 10 toward the Hunsrück Höhenstraße.
