Oberwesel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Oberwesel combines the historic atmosphere of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley with distinctive insights into culture, winegrowing traditions and the landscape. In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, historic small towns, terraced vineyards and castle ruins on the hilltops meet. Oberwesel is located in the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley at a geological transition where soft clay slate gives way to hard sandstone. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Oberwesel can then continue their accommodation search.
Culture
The Liebfrauenkirche in Oberwesel houses the Eberhardt/Klais organ, described as the largest organ on the Middle Rhine. It has 54 stops, 3,621 pipes and an original Baroque case. The instrument can be heard at organ concerts, organ matinees and private organ tours.
The Tower Museum allows visitors to climb the gate tower of Schönburg and enjoy views over the Rhine Valley. The history of more than 700 years is presented in the tower rooms. The Oberwesel Town Museum is housed in restored rooms of a former wine cellar and presents life on the Rhine across four floors. Exhibits include a virtual journey along the Rhine, an interactive underwater world exploring the Rhine’s biodiversity, and a model railway depicting Oberwesel around the 1950s.
Exploring the Area
The Schwede-Bure Tour begins at Schaarplatz and follows Oberwesel’s medieval town wall to St. Martin’s Church. Along the way, it leads to the Kackstuhl viewpoint, with a view of the Rhine, and Landsknechtsblick, offering views of Oberwesel and the Rhine. The tour also passes the 1845 Calvary Chapel, which was formerly a destination for processions.
At a quarry along the Schwede-Bure Tour, layers of slate can be seen whose age is estimated at 300 to 400 million years. The tour also passes the Goldemund vineyard site, where visitors can learn more about Oberwesel wine.
Art
The Oelsberg Art Trail is a project of the town of Oberwesel, the local young winegrowers’ association, and artists Michael Apitz and Volker Boch. In Oberwesel Sculpture Park, modern art and historic architecture enter into a dialogue. The park consists of individual works of art extending from the Rhine promenades through the vineyards to the heights near Urbar.
Wine and Tradition
The Oberwesel Cultural Centre displays historical information, former costumes and cups associated with the Wine Witch tradition. The Wine Witch herself is a cultural figure resembling a wine queen who is enthroned annually during the Walpurgis Night celebration.
