The former synagogue of the Jewish community of Laufersweiler is the only one in the Rhine-Hunsrück district that is still recognisable as a synagogue.
Culture and history
The memorial room on the ground floor of the former synagogue houses a museum on the Jewish history of the Hunsrück with a permanent exhibition. The exhibition “They Belonged to Us” examines the development and destruction of Jewish life in the region.
The former synagogue is part of a memorial ensemble comprising the Jewish cemetery, the Path of Remembrance, the Path of Jewish Poetry and an artistic memorial. The Path of Remembrance is an approximately one-hour circular route with information about Laufersweiler’s Jewish past. The former synagogue also houses the Forst-Mayer Study and Meeting Centre for Rural Judaism.
There are no regular opening hours at the former synagogue; it opens for events and on request. Another historic site in the village is the Catholic church. It was built in 1842 after its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1839.
Nature and trails
The Kappleifelsen Trail is connected to the Unterdorf village square opposite the old town hall. It follows the Hirschbach and Idarbach streams through meadow valleys and forests to the Kappleifelsen. The trail passes directly by the “Folken” juniper heath; there are also two information boards about the landscape.
The “Folken” juniper heath is maintained as an open-land biotope by Skudden and Pomeranian sheep. Typical juniper heath vegetation is once again developing strongly in Laufersweiler.
