Hiking the Eltzer Burgpanorama Dream Trail

The circular hiking trail is 12.66 kilometers long and starts and ends at the parking lot of the community center in Wierschem. The route climbs along natural paths. Even here, the open expanse of the Moselle Plateau comes into view. Along the way, you can also experience the varied natural landscape of the Eltzbach river valley and its graceful coppiced oak forests. The plateau, river valley, and forests offer different landscapes along the hike, rather than reducing it to a single viewpoint.

Village history and chapels

St. Apollonia’s parish church was first mentioned in a document in 1372. Another historic landmark is the old village school, a half-timbered house in the center of the village. In the 19th century, up to 100 children were taught there each day. The church and school represent different aspects of village life in the past: one is a sacred place with a long documented history, while the other recalls teaching in the village center. Those interested in cultural history will find specific points of interest here beyond the hiking landscape.

At the edge of the village, on the road toward Keldung, stands the small Marian chapel. It was built toward the end of the previous century by the Johann Müller family on their field outside the village, as an expression of gratitude to the Mother of God. Its location on the outskirts and its recorded history set it apart from the parish church and the old school. Eltz Castle and St. Anthony’s Chapel

Guided tours of Eltz Castle offer an informative and entertaining journey through almost 900 years of German architectural and cultural history. This is a different focus from the landscape experience on the Dream Trail: here, architecture and cultural history take center stage. St. Anthony’s Chapel, at the end of the parking lot for Eltz Castle, was restored by the Counts of Eltz and fitted with a small tower.

St. Anthony’s Chapel near Eltz Castle is a hall building believed to have been built in the 18th century. It is associated with a Stations of the Cross shrine in the form of a wayside monument from the 19th century. The cautious dating of the hall building and the later Stations of the Cross shrine belong to different stages of the building’s history.
