History
Gering was first mentioned in official records in 1257 under the name Girreke. Historical variants of the place name are Girniche, Gyrneke and Jerrich. In the Old Empire, Gering belonged to Electoral Trier, within the Münster district.
An older St Nicholas chapel in Gering is mentioned in records from the 12th century. Slate mining shaped Gering for many years and is represented in the municipal coat of arms by the slate hammer.
Leisure
Gering’s public children’s playground is located on Gartenstraße. The playground includes a 20.00 m × 12.50 m grass playing field with two goals.
Hiking
The Gering–Elzbach–Kollig–Gering route is 13.8 kilometres long and classified as a moderate hiking trail. The Ölmühle Circular Trail is an 8.5-kilometre, moderate circular hike along field, forest and meadow paths.
The Ölmühle Circular Trail passes Gering Mill, Kollig Mill and Ölmühle Mill. Part of the route follows the Osteifel Trail along the Eltz.
On the Maifeld, traditional rogation processions lead through the fields to churches or chapels. Prayers are said for a good harvest and protection from storms.
