Herresbach is located in the scenic Eifel region, with hilly routes and panoramic views. The area offers a variety of opportunities for road cycling. The routes described include the Weitblick hiking trail, a moderately difficult 15.9-kilometre circular route starting and ending at Herresbach village square, and the Sonnen circular route, an approximately 6-kilometre circular route that begins and ends beside the Schutzengel Chapel at Herresbach village square.

Nature

The Weitblick hiking trail follows the Eschbach stream and crosses meadows above the Eschbach district. Its section at the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower offers views across the Eifel, Hunsrück and Westerwald. The trail also climbs towards Hohe Acht and the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower.

The Sonnen circular route offers panoramic views over meadows, forests and fields in the Vordereifel cultural landscape. It reaches the Geiersbusch juniper area; from there, the views extend as far as Hochbermel, the Boos Eifel Tower, Hochkelberg and Nürburg.

The small Herresbach wayside shrine offers a place for reflection and contemplation. The Herresbach oak tree is described as an oak several hundred years old that was lost in Storm Kyrill in 2007. A shelter near the Herresbach oak tree offers views over expansive fields and meadows.

A car park is available for the Weitblick hiking trail at the village square beside the Schutzengel Chapel. The signage may be incomplete in some sections; it is therefore recommended to download the GPX track and map in advance.

Geographical Location

Döttinger Höhe is a section of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The Döttingen dry maar is described as a former crater lake and is now a shallow depression.

Culture

The Schutzengel Chapel in Herresbach was built in 1843 from local quarry stone and is a protected cultural monument. Herresbach Chapel was consecrated on 3 September 1848.

Döttingen Chapel has a documented pilgrimage tradition associated with the festivals of Lüfthildis and Valentin. It also preserves a Baroque altarpiece with a Madonna and Child in the central niche, as well as statues of its chapel patrons.
