The Prümer Land Tour Route 3 leads right through Schwirzheim: It is 25.0 km long, has a stated duration of five hours, and starts and ends at the church in Schwirzheim, Im Graben 27. The route includes a total ascent of 344 metres and a total descent of 344 metres. The tour can also be extended by two additional circular routes of 2.5 km and 3 km.
Nature
Most of the route runs through open terrain with panoramic views; only occasional sections lead through woodland. In the area around Schwirzheim, Prümer Land Tour Route 3 passes Devonian rock strata and limestone grasslands. The landscape around Wallersheim, Büdesheim and Schwirzheim belongs to the Prümer Kalkmulde, the largest limestone basin in the Eifel. It is rich in fossils and largely preserves complete Devonian rock strata dating from around 400 million years ago.
Schwirzheim lies on the southern edge of the North Eifel Nature Park. The remaining walls of the former abbey palace stand on the northeastern edge of the village; the entire dolomite cone is a protected area.
Culture and History
Prümer Land Tour Route 3 includes Schwirzheim’s parish church of St. Margaret as a highlight of the route. St. Margaret’s has round-arched windows on the exterior that are reminiscent of Romanesque architecture, while the interior has a Baroque character. The present church was newly built in 1923–25 after the former chapel had been extended in 1685 and 1786. Figures of Mary and John from the Belgian pilgrimage site of Banneux stand on the high altar.
The ruins of Hartelstein Castle in Schwirzheim date from the 10th century and are now preserved only by a few sections of wall.

Public transport connections to Prüm and Gerolstein are available for travel to the surrounding area. Bus stops are located in the village centre and on Im Dorf and Im Graben streets.
