Hamm Castle can be visited in Hamm. Its oldest components include a keep from the 14th century and a gatehouse from the 16th century. The complex was extensively restored between 1885 and 1896 and restored again in 1998.

Culture

The medieval fortification in Hamm was first mentioned as early as 1052. Hamm Castle is listed as a monument zone in the Rhineland-Palatinate Register of Cultural Heritage. Its core dates from the late Middle Ages, while its present appearance dates from 1895/96. Hamm Castle includes a curtain wall dating predominantly from the 14th century, two towers, and a keep from the 14th century.

The two-storey castle chapel at Hamm Castle dates from 1700 and contains three Renaissance tombs. The four-storey castle house bears the date 1586 and is considered, in its core, to be a 14th-century structure.

Nature

Hamm lies in a sharply winding section of the Prüm Valley below Hamm Castle. The municipal area covers 174 hectares, of which 107 hectares are forested. Hamm Castle stands on a ridge above a small settlement, surrounded by forests and enclosed by the Prüm River.

Bitburg Reservoir has a lakeside promenade about five kilometres long for walking. Circular Trail No. 22 in the South Eifel Nature Park runs through the Echtersbach Valley and begins and ends in Wißmannsdorf. It passes through the Hammer Büsch, a hillside forest, and offers panoramic views of Hamm Castle. Near Biersdorf am See, it runs parallel for several kilometres to the Bitburger Brewery Route, a Nordic walking trail.
