Niederpierscheid is shown on the official route map of the Devon Trail for the circular hike around Waxweiler. The Devon Trail is a 15.7-kilometre circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty, with 391 metres of ascent and 390 metres of descent. In the Islek region, it crosses rocky outcrops and winding valleys, following the Prüm and later the Dierbach through a valley where forests and meadows alternate and fishponds are located.

Culture and History

Niederpierscheid is an Eifel village. Archaeological settlement remains from Roman times have been found in Niederpierscheid. The village was first documented in 1505 as “Nyderpirscheid”. During the feudal period, Niederpierscheid belonged to the Lordship of Neuerburg in the Duchy of Luxembourg. Under French administration, the village was part of the canton of Arzfeld in the Wälderdepartement. During the Prussian period, Niederpierscheid initially belonged to the mayoralty of Ringhuscheid and later to the mayoralty of Waxweiler.

The ending “-scheid” points to the settlement’s origins during the late medieval clearance period. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents fossils and finds from the Köppen quarry. Outside Waxweiler, visitors can search for fossils; hammers are available to borrow from the inn.
