Nature

The South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 92 follows the Berkother Bach downhill and the Merlbach uphill. Around Krautscheid, the trail offers sweeping views across the heights of the Eifel and showcases a rural cultural landscape shaped by agriculture. Berkoth is also connected to the North Eifel Nature Park (High Fens-Eifel) and the South Eifel Nature Park.

Culture

The Berkoth Chapel Circuit – Route 2 starts at the chapel in Berkoth. It connects the churches in Berkoth, Burscheid, Oberpierscheid, Ringhuscheid, Krautscheid and Uppershausen. The starting and finishing points are in Berkoth, and the route is marked with signposts.

The sites along the route include the Oberpierscheid filial church, which was first mentioned in an archiepiscopal decree from 1408. The chapel in Krautscheid was placed under special protection as a cultural monument in 1984. It is also a pilgrims’ station on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.

Along the Way

The Chapel Circuit includes paved sections, natural trails and short stretches of footpath. It is intended for experienced hikers with a good basic level of fitness and offers numerous views across the hilly Eifel landscape. The route passes through open fields and small areas of woodland. Krautscheider Hof is designated as a refreshment stop on the South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 92.

Getting There

Travelling by car is recommended for the Chapel Circuit. The car park for the circuit is located by the church at the village community centre.
