Emmelbaum: Circular Routes and Village History

Emmelbaum lies on the Arzfeld plateau in the Western Eifel. Its circular hiking trails offer a clear way to explore the area: they range from a 3.9 km route through the countryside to a roughly 35 km trail with about 850 metres of elevation gain. There is also a chapel and a number of wayside crosses, offering glimpses into the village’s history. Circular routes of varying lengths

The R5 circular hiking trail is 3.9 km long and starts at the community centre in Emmelbaum. It follows paved paths through the countryside around Emmelbaum. If you would like to include a shorter loop in your stay, you can compare the R5 with Route No. 6, which is around 6 km long.

Route No. 6 runs from Emmelbaum via Engelsdorf and Froschseifen and back to Emmelbaum. Its approximate length and the places named along the way make it recognisable as a route in its own right. This means you can choose it for different reasons than the R5: as well as the distance, you may also be interested in the place names along the route. Both are described as circular hiking trails, but they follow different routes and are different lengths.

For a much longer hike, there is the Great Circular Route 1–7. It is around 35 km long, has about 850 metres of elevation gain and passes, among other places, Wallenbornerhof, Emmelbaum and Engelsdorf. These details set it apart in scale from the two shorter loops. If you plan your trip around this route, you can take both the distance and elevation gain into account; the places named also locate the route in the surrounding area. Circular hiking routes R1 to R7 were jointly developed by the local municipalities of Ammeldingen, Plascheid, Emmelbaum and Heilbach and are signposted.

Chapel and wayside crosses

Emmelbaum’s local cultural landmarks also tell a story. The village has a lovingly maintained chapel. It was donated by a local resident who returned safely from captivity during the war.

There is a wayside cross at Hauptstraße 9 in Emmelbaum. The municipality of Emmelbaum also has a wayside cross at Sachsenhauserhof 1 and another at Windhof (Wallenbornerhof).
