Lieg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
In Lieg, trails lead through forests, meadows, and fields; they vary in difficulty and length. The “Nature and Energy” wind park trail (K5) is a hiking trail approximately 5 km long in the Lieger Wald wind park and is suitable for families with pushchairs. Four information boards focus on wind energy; one of them is aimed at children and explains how a wind turbine works.
Nature and Trails
The Lei Trail provides a short connection to the K1 circular hiking trail. Its route includes steep slopes, wooden footbridges, and changing surfaces. The K3 circular trail leads across meadows and fields, through the forest, and down into the Dünnbach Valley before returning to Lieg. In the Dünnbach Valley, this trail passes four former silver ore mines. The mines are protected because they serve as shelter for bats; entering them is not permitted.
The 30 km-long Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route connects Treis-Karden and Kastellaun via Lieg.
Culture and History
The present-day parish church of St. Goar in Lieg was built in 1764 without a tower. The church contains an elaborately designed altar with a revolving tabernacle and a pipe organ whose stops are operated using foot pedals. The Seläcker wayside shrine is a St. Joseph’s Chapel between Lieg and Lahr on the Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route.
The Wendelinus Chapel at the entrance to Lieg was rebuilt in 1908 on the site of an earlier chapel. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows at the entrance to Lieg was built in 1880. A Roman settlement excavated near Lieg yielded Roman pottery, tools, and coins. The settlement served as a way station on the ancient Roman road between Treis-Karden and Kastellaun.
The traditional harvest thanksgiving festival takes place every two years and includes a procession with more than 60 groups, floats, and music groups. A local art gallery displays works by an artist couple and offers painting classes.
