Nature

Moselkern lies between vineyards and forests on the left bank of the Moselle, opposite the Druidenstein at the mouth of the Elzbach. The landscape around Moselkern combines the Moselle and Elz Valley with wooded paths, rock formations, meadows, and historic trails. Walks along the river and viewpoints such as Heideküppchen, Buchhell, and Druidenstein offer views over the Moselle Valley, the Elz Valley, and Moselkern.

Culture and History

The parish church of St. Valerius has a Romanesque west tower dating from the 12th century and is listed in the register of cultural monuments of Cochem-Zell. The present nave was newly built as a hall church in 1789 and 1790.

The Merovingian Cross is a stone monument dating from around 700; replicas stand in front of the parish church and in the cemetery of Moselkern. It is considered the oldest monumental depiction of the crucified Christ north of the Alps.

The Historic Town Hall of Moselkern is an example of Moselle Franconian half-timbered architecture, with walls up to one metre thick. Guided tours and culinary wine tastings are offered there on request.

Hiking

A 4.5-kilometre hiking trail follows the Elzbach from Moselkern to Eltz Castle. The Elztalblick circular trail is an approximately 5.3-kilometre loop starting in Moselkern, with views into the Elz Valley. The Heideküppchen circular trail runs for approximately 5.8 kilometres and offers views over the Moselle and into the Elz Valley. The Übereltzer circular trail is an approximately 4.8-kilometre loop with views over the Moselle and the surrounding vineyards.
