Nature and Trails
Dohr lies in a hollow on the Eifel Plateau and is surrounded by the Ellerbach stream. There are developed cycling and hiking trails around the village; the routes lead towards the Ellerbach and Moselle valleys as well as to the golf park on the Ediger-Eller heights. Dohr can be reached via the B 259 and K 18 roads.
Exploring the Region
The Cochem Holiday Region stretches from Bremm at the Calmont to Moselkern at the foot of Eltz Castle. The area offers cycling along the river and hiking on vineyard trails stretching for many kilometres. The vineyard trails offer views of ruins, castles and the Moselle. Boat trips provide an opportunity to explore the Moselle landscape in the Cochem Holiday Region.
The Moselsteig Trail is 365 kilometres long and divided into 24 stages between Perl and Koblenz. In the Cochem Holiday Region, five Moselsteig stages with different characteristics can be explored.
Culture and History
A chapel in Dohr was first mentioned around 1475 as a subsidiary church of the Cochem parish. The chapel of Dohor was destroyed in 1720. The church tower was destroyed in 1852 and rebuilt in 1853. St. Nicholas Church was extensively restored in 1964; in the same year, it received three new bells. St. Nicholas Church is open during the day from Monday to Sunday.
The former Dohr bakehouse stood directly in front of the church and contained two ovens. On the evening before baking day, the villagers drew lots to determine the order in which they would use the bakehouse. The former bakehouse was a place for communication. Together, the former bakehouse and the church formed the centre of Dohr village.
The Dohr Mill in the Ellerbach Valley ceased operations in 1927; its ruins are still preserved.
Village Life and Symbols
The coat of arms of Dohr features a stylised Celtic wall, recalling the Celtic origin of the village's name. The black floral ornament comes from the chalice of the subsidiary church and refers to the village's former affiliation with the Cochem parish.
