Eckfeld: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Eckfeld can then continue their search for accommodation. Eckfeld is a small settlement in the Volcanic Eifel with a beautiful upland landscape. The Eckfeld Maar is one of Europe’s most significant fossil deposits. It formed around 44 million years ago during an early phase of Eifel volcanism.
Nature
Around the Eckfeld dry maar, information boards provide details about fossil finds and the conclusions drawn from them. Independent digging is prohibited there; the area has been protected since 1988. For visiting the excavation site, it is recommended to park at the Eckfeld sports field and walk the short distance to the Eckfeld dry maar.
Trails and Activities
The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route passes directly by Eckfeld. The Määrchen Nature Forest Trail was specially designed for children and explains the forest ecosystem in a playful way. The Lieser Trail runs through the surrounding landscape; it is a 74-kilometre-long route connecting the Eifel and the Moselle.
Culture and History
The history of Eckfeld includes the church tower, which was built around 1450. St. Catherine’s Church was initially built in the 1450s as an extension of Eckfeld’s fortified tower. The west tower of St. Catherine’s dates from the second half of the 15th century and was originally fortified. After a fire, the church was rebuilt in the 19th century.
Creative seminars are offered in the former village school. Participants work with wood and natural stone; instruction ranges from a basic introduction to craftsmanship to support with artistic design.
