Papiermühle combines cultural and historical discoveries with hiking and cycling experiences in the Dhron Valley. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Papiermühle will find a place where different travel ideas can be combined: historic chapels, traces of past settlements, and paths through the landscape stand side by side on an equal footing.

Chapels with Different Stories

One of the prominent cultural landmarks is the Chapel of St. Konrad of Parzham. It was consecrated on 24 June 1954 and renovated in 1986. Following its successful conversion for a new use, it is a multifunctional space owned by the local municipality. Its location near the confluence of the Kleine Dhron and Große Dhron rivers also connects the chapel with a specific point in the landscape.

Another historical facet is represented by the wayside chapel in Papiermühle. The simple, three-sided building has a pointed-arch entrance and dates from the second half of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy is the now-rare wall decoration created using roller-stamp technique, also known as a pattern roller. This gives travellers interested in culture two different perspectives: on the one hand, the younger chapel with its later conversion for a new use takes centre stage; on the other, the older wayside chapel with its architectural form and rare wall decoration.

Hiking and Cycling around Papiermühle

The surrounding area also offers specific opportunities for active days on holiday. The circular hiking trail “Rund ums Dhrönchen” leads via the Zummethöhe, Dhrönchen, Heidenburg, Papiermühle and the Kron riding stables back to the Zummethöhe. The named stops give the hike a clear sequence and make it easier to plan your own day without having to commit to a single excursion destination.

Cyclists can choose between two routes with different characteristics. The “Moselle Cycle Tour with a Roman Flair” leads below Hunolstein via Gräfendhron and Papiermühle back to the Moselle. In Neumagen-Dhron, it meets the Moselle Cycle Route. From Papiermühle, the Nahe-Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route follows the course of the Dhron along a quiet farm track to Neumagen-Dhron. This allows historical themes, routes through the valley and the Moselle region to be incorporated into travel planning in different ways.

Archaeological Traces in the Dhron Valley

The history of the place extends beyond the visible buildings. The former paper mill is located in the Dhron Valley. In 1974, eight graves were uncovered near Papiermühle on the western slope of the Dhron Valley, a few hundred metres before the village, containing remains of jugs, bowls, pots and plates with cremated remains. Archaeologists interpreted the find as a section of a burial ground. In the “Unten im Kundel” district, remains of walls were also uncovered that represent the floor plans of two Roman buildings.

These historical clues make Papiermühle particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to fill their holiday days exclusively with a single activity. One day can be devoted to the chapels and archaeological traces, and another to the circular hiking trail or a cycling tour towards the Moselle. When looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Papiermühle, you can therefore first consider whether your focus is more on culture, hiking, cycling or a combination of these.
