Wine and Townscape

The vineyards on Minheim’s slopes lie on Devonian slate soils that store heat and contribute to the minerality of Moselle wines, especially Riesling. Minheim’s terroir also supports Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. The named vineyard sites include Burglay, Rosenberg, Günterslay and Kapellchen. Minheim offers wine tastings. The town’s architectural character also includes half-timbered farmsteads and winemakers’ houses.

Landscape and Trails

The Minheimer Wald trail is 3.5 kilometres long and runs mostly on level ground above Minheim along forest and vineyard paths. The Römersteig is a challenging route 22.26 kilometres in length, takes around 6 hours and 20 minutes, and ends in Minheim.

The Sonneninsel circular trail passes the Pestkapelle, the Burglayfelsen and the Altes Eichhaus. It offers views of the Moselle Valley from the Staustufenblick and from a detour to the Mosellorely viewpoint. Its wine education trail explains viticulture, grape harvesting, vine training and regional geology. The Moselle Cycle Route can also be cycled from Minheim in the direction of Neumagen-Dhron.

Minheim’s location on the Moselle offers opportunities for boat trips and water skiing; there is also a landing stage for boats as well as parking and rest areas.

Culture

The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist was built in 1840–42 and replaced a church dating from 1680. Inside is a tripartite altar arrangement. Its Baroque colonnade comes from St Gangolf in Trier and was made in 1760.

Getting Around Locally

A bridge connects Minheim with the B53 on the opposite bank of the Moselle. The old ferry landing recalls the former ferry crossing. The most important bus stops for the Sonneninsel circular trail are Minheim, Kiga and Minheim, K53. Depending on the bus connection, buses may instead stop at Minheim Bridge on the opposite side of the Moselle. Minheim and neighbouring Piesport jointly operate a tourist information office.
