At Nürburg, the Nürburgring offers an approximately 1.5-hour backstage tour with access to selected areas of the race track and insights into the history of motorsport. These include the pits, pit lane, media centre, paddock and winners’ podium. On the Nordschleife and the Grand Prix track, the Nürburgring also offers tourist drives in your own car or on your own motorcycle.
Culture
Nürburg Castle was built by the Counts of Are in the 12th century. It stands at an elevation of 678 metres and is the highest castle in Rhineland-Palatinate; it was also built on a basalt cone. The rock beneath Nürburg Castle was mentioned as “Mons nore” around 954 AD.
The 20-metre-high keep of the ruins of Nürburg Castle can be climbed and offers views over the High Eifel, the surrounding villages and the Nordschleife. A church in Nürburg was first documented in 1202 AD. The present-day St Nicholas Church has a Gothic choir dating from the 15th century; its Baroque nave and tower were built in 1816/17.
Hiking
The red hiking trail around Nürburg offers panoramic views over the Eifel region and passes a former ski-jumping facility on the northern castle hill. The yellow hiking trail follows the Nordschleife sections Antoniusbuche, Tiergarten and Hatzenbach. It also passes abandoned quarries that supplied building materials for the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.
The Green Hell hiking trail follows the Nordschleife for 20.8 kilometres. Shorter is the 0.8-kilometre Kleine Burgrunde hiking trail. In the Nürburgring adventure region, there are also themed hiking trails focusing on mills, military orders and the Green Hell.
Cycling and Winter
A mountain-biking route called Durch die Grüne Hölle runs around the Nordschleife. The 24-hour mountain-bike race Rad am Ring takes place around Nürburg and starts in the Nürburgring paddock.
Depending on the snow conditions, the castle hill in Nürburg is used for tobogganing. Burgstraße and the An der Steintränke car park are starting points for tobogganing on the castle hill. Cross-country ski trails of various lengths are prepared around Nürburg; the car park at the Graf Ulrich Hall is a starting point for Nürburg’s cross-country ski trails.
Meeting Place
The Burgweiherhütte is a municipal barbecue hut located just outside Nürburg. It has toilets, electricity and water and can accommodate groups of 10 to 40 people. The hut is accessible by car; parking spaces are available nearby.
