Kottenborn combines the St. Anthony’s Chapel standing on the slope at the edge of the village with the views from the Kottenborner Schweiz. The chapel was first documented in 1403; it is protected by old elm trees.
Culture
The St. Anthony’s Chapel in Kottenborn is a filial church of Kirmutscheid. Its Late Gothic choir bears the year 1525 on a keystone. In the 17th century, the chapel was extended by a low, two-bay nave. The construction had to be approved by the Adenau Commandery of the Order of St. John. The chapel also includes a wooden altar dating from 1790.
The mill in Kottenborn is also one of the traditional details of the village: it was built in the 18th century, first mentioned in old lease registers in 1728, and decommissioned in 1954.
Landscape
The Müllenwirft Loop reaches the Kottenborner Schweiz viewpoint on a mountain ridge and descends through the Kottenborn Forest into the Wirftbach valley. The viewpoint features panoramic information boards and a seating area. From the mountain ridge, hikers can look over Kottenborn towards Aremberg, Reifferscheid and Rodder; at the same time, the view extends across green volcanic cones.
Trails
Following in the Footsteps of the Knights of the Order is a 41.6-kilometre hiking loop designed in two stages. The first day ends at St. Anthony’s Chapel in Kottenborn. The fourth stage of Following in the Footsteps of Old Mills leads from Wirft via Barweiler and Kottenborn to Quiddelbach and Adenau. The hiking trail passing through Kottenborn is consistently marked with its trail logo.
