Metelen is located in the parkland of western Münsterland. The origins of the town date back to a monastery founded in 889 by Friduwi on the Vechte. At the same time, the surrounding area combines sandy soils, forests, and wetlands; contrasting landscapes meet within just a few kilometres. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Metelen can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture and History

The present-day Catholic parish church defines Metelen’s skyline. Its construction probably began in the late 11th or early 12th century. The present parish church and the southern wing of the dormitory date from Metelen’s monastic period. The abbey dating from 1720, the collegiate wall, and the former curia date from the collegiate period.

The Ackerbürgerhaus offers visitors a historic setting in which to linger. The Stiftskammer preserves treasures connected with Metelen’s economic and cultural life. Metelen is described as a place with traditional crafts, historic buildings, vibrant traditions, and rural nature, and supports special projects in the cultural sector.

Landscape

The “Around Metelen” cycling tour is approximately 27 kilometres long. It passes the Metelener Heide protected landscape area and the Strönfeld nature reserve; its stops also include the Dino Zoo and a miniature golf course. In the Metelener Heide, next to the Dino Zoo Metelen, there is a family-friendly nature miniature golf course.

Things to Do

The historic Wallweg follows Metelen’s old fortifications. Plagemann’s Mill is located on the Vechte and is considered one of the oldest mills in the region. The restored mill has turbine-powered technology and serves as a mill and sawmill museum with more than 700 exhibits.

The Metelen Railway Museum displays an old signal box, a locomotive, a rail trolley, and other railway equipment. Visitors can try out a true-to-the-original replica of a rail trolley using their own muscle power. The museum is housed in the station building of Metelen Land station between Metelen and Wettringen. The station is located on the Münster–Enschede railway line and is a starting point for walks or cycling tours into the Metelener Heide.

The Triangel cycle route covers 62 kilometres between Metelen, Neuenkirchen, Ochtrup, Rheine, Steinfurt, and Wettringen.
