Hiking Trails and Scenery in the Lienener Osning
The “Holperdorper” is one of eight Teutoschleifen trails in the Tecklenburger Land. At 13 km, this circular route offers a clearly defined option if you are looking for a trail with a set total distance. The Hermannsweg offers a different scale: it runs for 156 km from Rheine to Velmerstot and also passes through Lienen. The section in Lienen crosses Westerbecker Berg, the highest point in the Münsterland. This gives you a choice between a single loop and a long-distance hiking trail when planning your holiday.
The Lienener Osning nature reserve, with the ridges of the Teutoburg Forest, invites you to walk and hike along the Holperdorper or the Hermannsweg throughout the year. In the northern part of Lienen, the Holperdorper Valley lies beyond the Teutoburg Forest. Here, the Duvensteine are a distinctive rock formation on the border with Lower Saxony. A viewing platform at the hiking car park on Zum Steinbruch road offers views of the quarry and the Münsterland park landscape.
Historic Landmarks and a Digital Tour
A visible Romanesque tower from a 12th-century building defines the Evangelical Church of Lienen. The 3.5 km digital tour “Historic Lienen” also starts at the church. The free “Future History” app combines historical and contemporary images with audio, text and augmented reality. You can take the tour on your smartphone using the app or as a web version. Its fixed starting point, manageable distance and range of media make it a distinctive way to discover Lienen’s history as you go.

At the BARFUSS-PARK Lienen, a 1 km route takes you through a sensory nature experience featuring wood, stones, bark mulch, grass, clay and water. This variety of materials sets the park apart from the longer hiking trails: the focus here is on experiencing the ground underfoot, not on covering an extended route. Historic railways are another attraction in Lienen. The Eisenbahntradition association runs trips on historic trains from Lienen station, including, for example, steam locomotives and carriages. As these experiences appeal to different interests, you can decide whether to focus your trip on hiking, history, nature experiences or railway heritage.
If you would like to explore by bike, you can start the northern route of the 100 Castles Route in Lienen at the Haus des Gastes or at Kattenvenne station. The northern route is 35 km long. Another activity is the Lienen indoor and outdoor swimming pool; its indoor pool has a water area of 200 m². Both options complement the hiking trails and historic sights with a cycle route and an indoor swimming pool.
