Monastic History and Art in Gravenhorst
With its church, convent buildings, mill, millpond, bakery and brewery, monastery wall and historic bridges, the former Gravenhorst Monastery conveys the impression of a monastic complex that has been almost completely preserved. Its various buildings and features give the site a rich historical character: alongside the church, the mill, pond and outbuildings are also part of the complex’s historic appearance.
For more than ten years, DA Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst has offered a space to experience contemporary, cross-disciplinary art and culture—and to take part and think. Alongside exploring the site’s history, visitors can engage with art. Guided tours focus on the monastery’s history and art. There are also theatrical guided tours featuring historical characters, offered on the first and third Sunday of every month. Group tours can be booked by arrangement. Culture enthusiasts can choose between a tour about the site’s history, an art-focused tour and a theatrical tour.
Bevergern: Church and Historic Civic House
In Bevergern, St. Mary’s Parish Church is a late Gothic hall church with a polygonal choir dating from the 15th century and a richly decorated interior. Its construction history also includes several notable dates: the tower was raised in 1686 using masonry from Bevergern Castle, which had been blown up in 1680. Further additions were made in 1759, 1767 and 1937. These dates mark different phases of construction and show that the church’s form was expanded over a long period.
Another historic building is the Küsterei, a half-timbered gabled house with a half-hipped roof dating from 1663. It is one of Bevergern’s oldest houses. Formerly the home of a farmer-citizen, it has a large entrance hall behind the gateway. The church and the Küsterei offer different ways to explore Bevergern’s architectural history: the late Gothic church with its later additions, and a half-timbered house whose interior reflects its former use.
Torfmoorsee Lake and Equestrian Sports
The 57-hectare Torfmoor recreational area in Hörstel includes the lake of the same name, Torfmoorsee. You can sail, fish and surf on the lake. There is also a sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn where you can relax and enjoy the sun. This offers different ways to spend time by the water: you can focus on sports or relax on the beach and sunbathing lawn.
Another option is the Riesenbeck International equestrian sports centre in Hörstel, which offers training and equestrian competitions. If you would like to focus your trip more on equestrian sports, this offers a different experience from art and architectural history in Gravenhorst and Bevergern or activities on Torfmoorsee lake.
