Squares and Architectural History in the Historic Centre
The historic centre is characterised by the Rathausplatz, the adjoining pond, the Kirchplatz surrounding the listed St Bartholomew’s Church, and the square by the Rathausschänke. There is also a Dutch-style cap windmill by the Rathausteich. It was built in 1876 on the foundations of the post mill erected in 1812. The two dates bring the evolution of mill construction at this site to life: the present-day mill followed a much older structure. The mill’s history thus adds another historic building to the picture of the church and town centre.
Night Watchman Tours and Events at Oldenborg
On night watchman tours, participants hear anecdotes and learn about the history of Ewaldi village and its historic buildings. The tours start at the Rathausplatz and last around 1.5 to 2 hours. Night Watchman Tour 2 follows the Ewaldibach stream and passes the Alte Möllersfabrik and the Heidenbaum, regarded as Laer’s best-known tree. Oldenborg lies about 2 km west of the historic centre. Three ramparts of a fortification dating from the 5th century have been preserved in the present-day woodland of Borg; the site was abandoned around 1050. Archaeological walks were announced there for 2026 on 12 April at 2 pm, 9 June at 6 pm, 4 August at 6 pm and 11 October at 2 pm. The Borg wardens Reinhard Fedder and Kalle Leismann explain the history and excavations, as well as legends and tales about the early medieval Borg. Places are limited and registration is required; check the latest information with the organiser in advance.
