Hiking trails between the canyon and the quarry

The Teutoschleife “Canyon Blick” is an 11-kilometre circular hiking trail between Lengerich and Leeden. It leads to the Canyon nature reserve. The trail has been awarded the German Hiking Seal and is part of the Tecklenburger Land premium hiking region. If you are looking for a shorter route around the canyon, the Canyon Tour is an approximately five-kilometre premium walking trail. Three viewing platforms offer different perspectives on the protected area. The two routes differ both in length and in their described format: one is a circular hike between two towns, the other a walking trail around the canyon.

Another circular hiking trail runs for eight kilometres around the Lengerich quarry. A wide variety of plants and striking limestone walls shape the landscape along the route. Technology, architecture and history

The Westphalian Field Railway Museum Lengerich focuses on field railway transport. The museum documents its history, displays an extensive collection and offers a short ride on a restored field railway. The ride makes the visit a hands-on experience of technology, while the collection and account of transport provide the historical focus.

The megalithic tomb at Wechte is among the oldest traces of the past. It is about 4,000 years old, was discovered in 1927 and partially reconstructed. The nave of the Evangelical Stadtkirche Lengerich offers a different historical perspective: it was completed in 1497 in the Late Gothic style as a Westphalian hall church. The two sites represent very different chapters of history.

The Jewish cemetery is the only remaining evidence of the former Jewish community and Jewish life in Lengerich; its history dates back to the 18th century. The Old Railway Tunnel is also associated with a sombre chapter: from March 1944 until shortly before the end of the war, it was an outpost of the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg under the code name “Rebhuhn”. The tunnel is not accessible because it is in a dilapidated condition in many places. This restriction is important when planning your visits: you cannot enter the historic site.

The local history museum at Haus Beccard displays, among other things, exhibits about life and work in a small town with a rural character in the past. Visits are possible by arrangement. This lets you tailor your visit to your interest in everyday history rather than rely on fixed opening times.

Weighing up location and arrival

The former manor house Haus Vortlage was first mentioned in the 13th century. The private estate includes a mill, an oak avenue, a moat and a main house; it is also a listed monument, the seat of an association and a foundation, and a meeting place. The moated castle is stated to be open from March to November. On Sundays, the art café serves coffee and cake from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. These hours may be an important factor in planning your day if you would like to visit Haus Vortlage.

If you are arriving by train, take the station’s location into account when planning your trip: Lengerich station is about 2.5 kilometres from the town centre, and there is a bus connection. The Old Town Hall houses the tourist information office, the public library and the municipal archive.
