Castles, museums and archaeological traces

Burg Altena is a monument of national importance. It was also the site of the world's first, and therefore oldest, permanent youth hostel. For anyone interested in history, it offers a special point of connection: the castle combines its significance as a monument with a remarkable role in the history of youth hostels.

The German Wire Museum offers a different perspective on the past. As an interactive museum, it focuses on wire production, both past and present. Interactive stations invite visitors to take part. In addition to the history of technology, the museum explores the social, economic and cultural history of wire. This allows visitors to explore the subject from several angles—from production methods to its significance in different areas of life.

Another cultural and historical discovery is Balver Höhle. Its archaeological finds make it one of Europe's most important sites for cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic. This offers a distinct focus for anyone interested in early human history and archaeological sites.

Felsenmeer and Hönnetal

The landscape also offers striking destinations. The ravines of the Hönnetal are among the nature reserves described as representative of the limestone areas in the northern part of Märkischer Kreis. At Felsenmeer Hemer, impressive rock formations have developed over centuries under the influence of wind, water and people. The area is also home to one of Westphalia's oldest iron ore mining sites—natural formations and the history of raw materials meet in the same place.

There is a clear guideline for visiting Felsenmeer: it may only be explored via designated trails. The designated panoramic trail leads to the viewpoints. If you include Felsenmeer in your excursion plans, you can follow the approved routes and visit the viewpoints accessible from them.

Industrial history and outdoor trails

At Luisenhütte, a visitor-focused museum brings to life how iron was produced there and further processed into cast products. There is also a geocaching multicache around the hut. Visitors can borrow GPS devices at the Hüttenschänke and set off on a digital treasure hunt with a flyer. The museum and geocaching offer two different ways to explore the site: one focused on historic ironworking and the other on discovery by GPS.

If you prefer to travel by train, consider the Sauerländer Kleinbahn. On selected days, its heritage train carries passengers in restored carriages between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer. On operating days between May and October, the trains travel through the Elsetal countryside. Special steam or diesel trips can be booked outside the published operating times. When planning your excursion, check which of these travel options suits your stay.

For hiking, the Sauerland Höhenflug and Sauerland Waldroute, two long-distance trails serving the wider region, pass through Märkischer Kreis. The Märkische Höhlenroute follows the well-signposted “Radeln nach Zahlen” numbered-junction network and offers several access points along the route. In the wider regional area, the new edition of the “Wandern im Märkischen Sauerland” booklet contains information on 44 hiking trails. The selection ranges from easy, family-friendly routes to challenging day trips.

Choose the right base

The destinations appeal to different interests: the castle, museums and cave offer cultural and historical highlights; Felsenmeer and Hönnetal are ideal for nature experiences, while the long-distance trails and cave route offer ways to explore the countryside. Choose a holiday apartment based on the excursions that matter most to you, and use the respective locations as a guide. This way, you can start your search for suitable accommodation with the travel experience that interests you most.
