Hiking in the Stilleking Nature Reserve

Large pastures and heath vegetation define the Stilleking nature reserve. They provide a refuge for many endangered animal and plant species. A herd of Heck cattle grazes in the area all year round. The name “Heck cattle” refers to their breeders, the Heck brothers. The herd is thus a distinctive feature of the landscape described here, alongside the open pastures and heath.

The Ochsentour leads through the nature reserve. In fine weather, several spots offer views across Stilleking and of Lüdenscheid. When planning your hike, you can keep these viewpoints in mind as a special feature of the route; the views are explicitly dependent on fine weather. Nature lovers will find a different perspective on Lüdenscheid in Stilleking than on a walk through the city centre.

Explore the City’s History for Yourself

Two city routes by Ge-Denk-Zellen e.V. make the history of Lüdenscheid during the Nazi era accessible. One route provides information about the activities of the party and state in Lüdenscheid. The other leads to places where Jewish people lived, worked and practised their faith. Texts, images and audio files are available at the individual stops. Their different focuses help you choose: you can explore the role of the party and state or follow the places where Jewish people lived in the city.

Museums, Art and Science

The history museum explores the development of the city and region, with a particular focus on the industrial history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its main themes include button production, metal and plastics processing, and the lighting industry. These topics offer insights into different areas of the region’s industrial history. Those more interested in art can find changing exhibitions at the Städtische Galerie Lüdenscheid, exploring the development of visual art in Germany after 1945.

The city’s museums also host constantly changing exhibitions, events and social gatherings in the glass connecting wing. At PHÄNOMENTA, a visit begins with your own curiosity: you can explore the exhibition at your own pace and according to your interests; conventional guided tours are not offered there. PHÄNOMENTA is located at the starting point of the Drahthandelsweg from Lüdenscheid to Iserlohn. It is about a five-minute walk from Lüdenscheid railway station. A café offers snacks, drinks, coffee specialities and homemade dishes.

Cultural Venues in the City

Neuenhof Castle is one of Lüdenscheid’s few architecturally and historically remarkable and outstanding listed buildings. The Kulturhaus was created as the city’s first public forum for theatre, concerts and events. As a public space, it was open to all cultural and social events organised by the city’s community. The Waldbühne in the city park once again serves as an open-air venue for a variety of events, including events organised by the Kulturhaus.
