Thanks to its archaeological finds, Balver Cave is considered one of Europe’s most important sites for the cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic.

At the Felsenmeer in Hemer, impressive rock formations have been shaped over centuries by wind, water and people. The site is also home to one of Westphalia’s oldest iron ore mining areas. The Felsenmeer can only be visited via designated paths; the marked panorama trail leads to viewpoints. Check the latest information on paths and access before your visit.

On certain days, the Sauerland Light Railway carries passengers in restored carriages between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer. Between May and October, operating days take passengers through the Elsetal landscape. Special steam or diesel services can be booked outside the published operating times. The Märkische Höhlenroute follows the well-signposted “Radeln nach Zahlen” junction network and offers several access points along the route. This provides visitors to the Märkischer Kreis with further options for including a range of themes and routes in their travel plans.
