The Lenne, town centre and trails
From a viewpoint above Osmecke, you can enjoy a view of Werdohl. The Lenneroute runs through the town and provides a starting point for planning a cycling tour. Another perspective is offered by the signposted 1.9 km town-centre trail: at the town bridge, you can discover the Lenne Fountain, the Lenne riverside promenade and the sculpture “Lenneken”, which watches the fountain beneath an umbrella.
For hikes, the Eichelhäherweg is one of the named trails in the Dösseln–Brenge area of Werdohl. A 1.8 km forest nature trail also runs from Landwehr at the Protestant cemetery to the Hexentanzplatz. The two trails with stated distances are similar in length, but differ in their destinations and surroundings: the town-centre trail focuses on the Lenne Fountain, promenade and sculpture, while the forest nature trail leads to the Hexentanzplatz. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Climbing crags with different levels of difficulty
On the way from Altenaer Straße to the climbing area, you reach the Denkmalwand first. It has equipped climbing routes in the intermediate to difficult range. The Lennewächter, which is somewhat hidden among the greenery, also has equipped, challenging routes. The Lenneplatte is used for climbing instruction and beginner courses; course offerings and registration details may change.
The Lennebrüggler is about 50 metres beyond the Lenneplatte. It has eight climbing routes, mostly grade 7, as well as two more at grade 4. The Werdohler Neunerplatte has 19 routes, mostly slab climbs on sloping rock in grades four and five. Route numbers, difficulty ratings and availability may change. Confirm these details locally before climbing.
The Lenne itself has its own special feature: in the Werdohl area, it is a grayling and trout region. If you’d like to fish, check access and permit requirements with the local fisheries authorities.
Industrial history and town museum
In 1789, what was described as the first black-plate rolling mill on the European continent was established in Werdohl-Elverlingsen. In 1817, it was converted into the first wire-rolling mill in Germany. The two dates mark different stages in metalworking: first black plate, then wire.
The Werdohl Town Museum explores the changes brought about by industrialisation and the town’s rapid growth. Its permanent exhibition comprises four themed rooms covering economic, social and cultural developments. It’s worth checking the latest visitor information before your visit.
