Herscheid: Hiking, Local History and Views
Accommodation in Herscheid
Herscheid offers several perspectives on a holiday: the long-distance Sauerland Höhenflug trail passes through the town, the historic Spieker offers insights into local history, and the Robert-Kolb Tower provides views over the Ebbe Mountains. There is also a sporty cycling circuit and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether hiking, cycling, local history or swimming should be the focus of your trip.
Hiking and Cycling around Herscheid
The long-distance Sauerland Höhenflug trail passes through Herscheid. Another activity is the nearly 19-kilometre cycling circuit around the town: it is a short, sporty and challenging after-work ride. This gives you two different ways to stay active—a section of a long-distance trail or a compact circular bike tour. Deciding which one you want to shape your stay can be a practical starting point for planning your trip.
Local History, Views and Legends
In the centre of Herscheid, the Protestant Apostelkirche stands right next to the historic Spieker. The Spieker serves as a local heritage centre and displays numerous historical exhibits. The church and heritage centre are therefore right beside one another, giving the town centre two distinct cultural points of interest.
The 18-metre-high Robert-Kolb Tower offers views over the Ebbe Mountains. Herscheid’s Sagenbänke (Legend Benches) also invite you to take a break and offer an audio play about a local legend. This lets you combine a rest with a story from the town.
For some time in the water, there is the Herscheid outdoor swimming pool, with a 25-metre competition pool and seven lanes. It is open seasonally. Along with the cycling circuit and long-distance trail, the pool adds another clearly defined activity to the choices on offer.
More places to visit in the wider Märkischer Kreis destination
The wider Märkischer Kreis destination also has distinctive places with historical themes. Altena Castle is a monument of national significance and was the location of the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum is an interactive experience museum about wire production in the past and present. Hands-on stations invite visitors to take part; the museum also explores the technological, social, economic and cultural history of wire.
The Luisenhütte offers a different perspective on the history of work: this visitor-focused experience museum vividly shows how iron was produced there and then processed into cast products. The Felsenmeer Hemer, meanwhile, combines natural and industrial history. Its rock formations developed over centuries under the influence of wind, water and people; the site is also home to one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. The Felsenmeer can only be visited via designated paths. The signposted panoramic trail leads to the viewpoints.
The Sauerland Light Railway also adds its own distinctive touch to the Märkischer Kreis. On certain days, the museum train carries passengers back and forth between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer in restored carriages. On operating days between May and October, the trains travel through the countryside of the Else Valley. If you are planning a ride, check the operating days in advance.
