Church History and Calvary Hill

Today’s parish church of St. Johannis stands at a site steeped in history: between the 11th and 13th centuries, the people of Glandorf built the first small church there, probably little larger than a chapel. The oldest parts of the present-day church date from 1270. These two details offer different insights into the development of the church site—from its early, modest beginnings to the oldest surviving parts of the current building.

Together with the Way of the Cross at Calvary Hill, this history makes the area’s religious sites a distinct focus of a stay in Glandorf.
