Brine and Experiences in the Spa Park

SoleVital offers year-round bathing and wellness experiences in natural brine heated to 32°C. The brine can also be experienced in a different way in the adventure spa park: at the brine pavilion, it trickles over dense walls of blackthorn branches, allowing visitors to inhale the brine. Several brine springs shape the park; one emerges in the open at the “Kolk” and feeds the Salzbach stream and the adjacent Glockensee lake. In the spring pool, salt water and fresh water slowly rise to the surface. Bathing, inhaling brine and observing the open spring phenomenon thus offer different ways to experience Bad Laer’s natural brine.

The adventure spa park also invites visitors to try things for themselves. The barefoot path features 21 different surfaces. On the fitness trail, visitors can work out in the fresh air at their own fitness level. In the sound and rhythm garden, they can swing impulse balls and make the triangles ring. So, alongside bathing, exercise and sound are distinct experiences on offer in the spa park.

Historic Traces and Bad Laer’s Piepstein Stone

The “Griese Toarn,” the early Romanesque fortified tower of the Catholic parish church of Mariae Geburt, is considered Bad Laer’s landmark. It is 37 metres high and dates from around 1010 to 1050 AD. Those interested in the town’s development can explore the “Liegende Acht” (“Lying Figure Eight”) Historic Trail: it follows the historic layout of the churchyard fort and Thieplatz as a double-ring settlement. Along surviving paths, the trail leads visitors through stories from centuries past.

The local history museum is another architectural highlight: it is housed in an old vicarage built in the Art Nouveau style from Piepstein, a stone typical of Bad Laer. In the linen room, an original 18th-century loom illustrates the process from flax to the finished “Seidook.” The themed tour “Steinreiches Bad Laer” (“Stone-Rich Bad Laer”) shares information about Piepstein and its origins in the brine. The tour runs from the brine inhalation pavilion in the spa park to the local history museum. Another tour of the spa park tells the story of the park’s origins and Bad Laer’s spa tradition at the spring by “Springmeyers Kolk”; it is also available in Low German on request.

Blomberg, Nature Trails and Outdoor Activities

The wooded Blomberg lies in a geologically interesting area of the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita. Its diverse ground flora includes wild garlic and occasional orchids that are protected by conservation laws. A well-signposted network of paths is suitable for walkers and hikers; the Ahornweg hiking trail also passes through Bad Laer. In total, Bad Laer has more than 100 kilometres of trails for hiking and cycling.

The Geotourism Trail combines geological themes with striking features along the way: it passes fossils, sand dunes in the middle of the forest and the old “Anneliese” quarry. Younger visitors are introduced to a prehistoric creature as their companion; a free puzzle booklet is available from Bad Laer Tourism. The Geo-Information Trail has a different focus: it is 6.4 kilometres long and features eight information boards. Both trails make nature and geological themes part of the visit, while Blomberg and its network of paths offer a setting of their own for walks and hikes.

Local Life and Culinary Discoveries

In the town centre, the level terrain and accessible design make it possible to get around the historic buildings in a wheelchair, with a pram or using a rollator. Weekly town tours and regular themed tours offer further opportunities to learn about Bad Laer’s history. The Fackelfest (Torch Festival) in the adventure spa park takes place every year over three days on the first weekend in August, with dancing, music, and light and fire shows.

Culinary experiences are also part of what Bad Laer has to offer: the guided TERRA.track “GenussKulTour” is a cultural and culinary hike through Bad Laer, where visitors can sample small treats from local food and drink partners. The “Die Mühle” café-restaurant is located in the spa park by Glockensee lake and serves German and Mediterranean dishes, high-quality coffee and homemade cakes.

For families, the Geotourism Trail offers a special reason to explore, with its prehistoric creature and puzzle booklet. Visitors looking to combine different interests will find cultural and nature-related attractions as well as swimming and outdoor activities in town.
