Georgsmarienhütte can be discovered from many different angles: five marked TERRA.tracks lead through the city, cultural trails explore several districts, and the city museum focuses on the history of the ironworks. There is also Kasinopark and the wooded ridges of the Teutoburg Forest, which border the city directly. This gives you a choice of activities for planning your trip, ranging from exercise and local history to nature.

Hiking Trails and Cultural Trails

The five clearly marked TERRA.tracks were created in cooperation with the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark. They are suitable for different fitness levels and hiking distances. If you are planning a hike in Georgsmarienhütte, you can therefore choose according to your preferred distance and fitness level, rather than assuming there is just one type of tour.

Another way to get to know the city’s districts is to follow the cultural trails in Kloster Oesede, Holzhausen, Harderberg, Dröper and Holsten-Mündrup. They can be explored on foot or by bicycle, free of charge. This offers an alternative to hiking: the trails combine physical activity with insights into the history of each district.

A suggested circular route of around 7 km is described for Holzhausen. Ten information boards explain the district’s history. The approximate distance and number of stops give you specific points of reference if you would like to include this route in your day’s plans. As a circular route, it differs from a hike where distance alone is the main consideration: here, local history is an integral part of the trail.

Kasinopark and the Teutoburg Forest

Established in 1872, Kasinopark brings together around 50 different exotic and native tree species. The park offers a distinctive natural attraction within Georgsmarienhütte. There is also a water-treading facility at Holsteteich. So, in addition to the variety of trees, visitors interested in the park can also find this specific feature. The wooded ridges of the Teutoburg Forest border the city directly and shape its landscape.

The bistro terrace at the outdoor pool in Panoramabad Georgsmarienhütte offers another view of the Teutoburg Forest panorama.

The History of Steelmaking at Villa Stahmer

Villa Stahmer houses the Georgsmarienhütte City Museum. Its main focus is the city’s history of steelmaking. On the first floor, an exhibition tells the story of the ironworks, whose development began in 1856 with the founding of a public limited company. King George V and his wife Marie provided financial support to the company. A visit to the museum therefore takes you back to the beginnings of the ironworks and the people who made its founding possible.

Robert Stahmer is also part of the villa’s history: he moved in there in 1900, close to his railway signal works in Oesede. The villa is one of the most beautiful houses in the Osnabrück district. The house itself and the exhibition offer different points of interest: the villa provides a connection to Robert Stahmer, while the exhibition on the first floor explores the history of the ironworks.
