Different landscapes meet directly in the Venne Moor: areas formerly used for industrial peat extraction border restored areas. This contrast makes the transformation of the moorland easy to see, while ensuring neither side is overlooked. Anyone interested in nature and landscape history will find a different focus here than in the town centre or at the historic museum sites.

The seven-kilometre Venne Moor Trail runs from the Beinker inn through the nature reserve. Its length gives you a clear point of reference when planning your route. Another measure of the municipality’s natural landscape is Lake Kronensee, which covers 400,000 square metres. The trail and the lake offer different ways to experience the landscape, without assuming that you will take a particular tour or make use of a specific leisure activity at the lake.

Church, Iron Age and Guided Tours

St. Lambertus Church defines the centre of Ostercappeln and is the town’s landmark. Finds from the exhibition “The Schnippenburg Mystery – Legendary Finds from the Celtic Period” offer a different way to explore the past: they are on display in the foyer of Ostercappeln Town Hall. The church and exhibition each have a different focus: one is a defining building in the town centre, the other, finds from the Celtic period.

The Schnippenburg Museum offers a public guided tour in the municipality throughout the year on the first Sunday of every month at 2:30 p.m. Check the current date with the organiser before travelling. Guided tours at the museum, combined Iron Age activities at the museum, the Schnippenburg excavation site and the Iron Age House, as well as school trips and group excursions, can also be booked year-round. You should also check dates and availability for these activities in advance. The outdoor area at the Darpvenne megalithic tombs has also been redesigned.

Mill History in Venne

The Venne Mill Village Museum is housed in a watermill built in 1725 on the Venne Mill Stream. Historic milling technology is presented at its original site. Volunteer millers demonstrate how grain is ground using millstones. The mill island grounds are home to historic buildings from the Venne area: a smithy, a bakehouse, a small cottage, a bleaching hut and a farmhouse garden.

The culinary offerings are also part of this mill village: the “Pferdestall” at Venne Mill serves wood-fired bread, butter cake and Mühlentropfen. Check before your visit whether the offering is available on your chosen date. The Venne Folk Spring takes place every year in May; if you have specific travel dates in mind, it is worth checking the event date for that year. Venne thus offers several reasons to visit: milling technology, historic buildings, regional food and a recurring event.

Cycle Route OC 1 is 15.63 kilometres long and leads, among other places, to the Ludwig Windthorst Memorial in Hitzhausen.
