Maiburg, a forest playground and educational activities about the environment and the history of the Earth give Bippen a distinctive character that brings nature and learning together. This contrast is an interesting consideration when planning your trip: Maiburg draws your attention to the forest and landscape, while Kuhlhoff and HaiTeC offer different ways to explore sustainable development and prehistoric times. When looking for a holiday apartment in Bippen, you might first consider whether nature, learning or local history should be the main focus of your stay.

Forest Landscape and Playground in Maiburg

The Maiburg nature reserve extends across areas of the municipalities of Bippen and Eggermühlen. It is part of a larger forest area. Most of it would naturally be covered by acidic-soil beech forest, a woodland type that is currently strongly underrepresented in northwestern Germany. This natural vegetation gives Maiburg a clear connection to its landscape.

A forest playground lies in the heart of Maiburg. This brings together a protected woodland and a specific place to play in the same landscape. For your holiday plans, these offer two different points of interest: you can focus on the forest landscape or make the playground a destination in its own right.

Learning About Sustainability and the History of the Earth

Kuhlhoff Bippen is an extracurricular learning centre specialising in developing and delivering environmental and experiential education activities on the topic of sustainable development. Its focus therefore goes beyond simply experiencing nature: sustainability and educational outreach are its main themes.

The HaiTeC centre is also located at the Kuhlhoff Bippen learning site. It introduces visitors to prehistoric times, when northern Germany was still seabed and sharks swam in the area around Bippen. This gives the history of the Earth a tangible connection to Bippen, while the TERRA.track Ice Age Discovery Trail focuses on a much later period.

The Ice Age Discovery Trail runs for six kilometres and has ten themed stations. They show how people worked the land at the end of the Ice Age. The trail thus combines a set route with a specific theme: how the landscape was used at that time. From Kuhlhoff, you can reach the learning site from the “Draisinen-Bahnhof” stop on foot or by bicycle via Bahnhofsstraße and Berger Straße; the distance is about 400 metres.

Village History at the Local Heritage House

The bakehouse at the local heritage house in Bippen features an exhibition about the village of Bippen and historical objects. It complements the themes of nature and the history of the Earth with a closer look at the village itself. If you compare the themes for your stay, this offers a different perspective from the Ice Age trail: the focus is on the village and the exhibition, not a route through the landscape.

More to Explore in the Wider Osnabrück Destination

Other places in the wider Osnabrück destination offer their own thematic highlights. At the Bad Essen-Barkhausen dinosaur tracks, fossilised footprints can be seen on a steep rock face. The attraction includes two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular route; the signposted Dinosaur Trail is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route. At the Tuchmacher Museum Bramsche, fluffy woollen blankets are made on working machines that are over 100 years old. At the Kalkriese Museum and Park, exhibits about the Varus Battle are presented using multimedia and are open to visitors. These examples have a different focus from Bippen’s Maiburg, learning centre and village history.
