Abbey History, Half-Timbered Houses and Pilgrimage

The Abbey Museum features the exhibition “Wietmarschen and the Reformation,” covering the history of the medieval monastery of Wietmarschen through to the Reformation. Visits are possible by appointment. The grounds of the historic abbey include well-preserved half-timbered houses dating from 1200 onward. Wietmarschen remains a place of pilgrimage to this day and is best known for its statue of the Virgin Mary. The monastery’s history and the pilgrimage thus offer different ways of exploring the history of the town.

The Packhaus Wietmarschen offers another perspective. It now houses a permanent exhibition by the Wietmarschen Local History Association (Heimatverein Wietmarschen e. V.) on customs, traditional crafts, important documents and archaeological finds. It complements the Abbey Museum’s themes with further insights into customs and crafts.

Moorland, Nature Trail and Recreational Lake

The viewing platform at Füchtenfelder Moor is in the district of Füchtenfeld, on Georgsdorfer Straße (Betonstraße), and is signposted from both directions. In the Lohner Sand recreation area, the nature trail is 2.6 kilometres long and has 19 themed stations about flora and fauna. The stations draw attention to plant and animal life; check the current trail conditions locally before setting out.

There is a café overlooking Wietmarschen recreational lake. If you plan to visit the café, check in advance whether it is open. The lake, viewing platform and themed trail offer different ways to include nature and scenery in your holiday plans.

The County of Bentheim as a Wider Region

The County of Bentheim is a varied landscape of heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte river valley. In Bourtanger Moor, numerous cycling and hiking trails pass through extensive moorland; guided tours and independent exploration are both possible.

The cross-border junction network in Bourtanger Moor marks each intersection with a number and provides the distances in kilometres between junctions. This makes it possible to plan tours in advance. The main route of the Grafschafter Fietsentour is about 220 kilometres long and passes through all the municipalities in the district. Compared with the 2.6-kilometre themed trail in Lohner Sand, it is on a different scale: a nature trail with themed stations versus a long cycling route through the district.
