Culture

The more than 200-year-old town hall in Neuenhaus showcases Dutch architectural influences and is used for readings, concerts and exhibitions. Guided town tours present historical, cultural, anecdotal and Jewish perspectives on life.

Another way to discover local stories and architecture is the Neuenhauser Stiegengang. The circular route can be extended to include seven Stolpersteine and a historic archway commemorating the stories and fate of Jewish families in Niedergrafschaft during the Nazi era.

Water and Landscape

The Mühlenkolk in Neuenhaus formerly served as a harbour. The mill landscape of the joint municipality of Neuenhaus is shaped by the Vechte, Dinkel and Lee rivers.

The hand-operated “Haal over” ferry runs on the Dinkel. It carries visitors and cyclists across a 72-metre crossing from one bank to the other. The ferry landing can be reached by car, bicycle or on foot via the footpath and cycle path behind Dinkelbad Neuenhaus. The ferry can accommodate up to twelve people together with their bicycles.

Canoe trips start at the boathouse on Lake Dinkel, which is used by Wassersportfreunde Neuenhaus e.V. After a cycling tour or hike, families can cool off at Dinkelbad.

On Foot and by Bicycle

The Neuenhauser Stiegengang is a 3.91-kilometre circular hiking trail rated “very easy”. At 20 stations, smartphone QR codes explain the local history and architecture.

The Dinkelstein Route can be explored by bicycle. Four amateur artists from Neuenhaus and Nordhorn contributed sculptures to this route.

Getting There

The Bad Bentheim–Neuenhaus railway section was reactivated for passenger services and opened in 2019.
