Laar combines a historic tower windmill with the Vechte, cross-border trails and works of art along the river. Next to the old mill there is a motorhome pitch with electricity hook-ups as well as fresh-water and wastewater facilities.
The main Grafschaft Fietsentour is approximately 220 kilometres long and passes through all the municipalities of Grafschaft Bentheim. The Laar Mill Route is a cross-border cycle route of around 40 kilometres. It starts at the mill in Laar and returns there via Coevorden and the Laarscher Bruch nature area.
The landscape around Laar is shaped by the loops of the Vechte and its retention areas. At the Horizont viewpoint, visitors can observe meadow birds, including lapwings and oystercatchers.
The tower windmill in Laar was built in 1806/07 and completely rebuilt and restored in 1981. The Reformed church, built in 1863, contains bells from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as a wooden pulpit dating from the 17th century.
There is also art along the paths through the surrounding area. About one kilometre downstream from the mill in Laar, the artwork Wortlos by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov is located where the Vechte crosses into the Netherlands. On the opposite bank of the Vechte, the Laar Mill Route passes the sculpture Chain Reaction by Bonnie Collura.
The historic Vechtezomp de Mölle departs from the landing stage near the mill in Laar; from Laar, it offers boat trips on the Vechte and the Coevorden-Almelo Canal. The Fähr Harm cable ferry allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Vechte using their own muscle power.
