The historic city wall of Schüttorf is the oldest surviving remnant of the fortifications dating from the time when the town was granted city rights. Together with the historic town hall, the stately villas of wealthy factory owners and the neo-Gothic Church of the Annunciation, it shapes the city’s historic landmarks.
The textile industry of the late 19th century left numerous stately villas of wealthy factory owners in Schüttorf, which continue to shape the townscape today. The Catholic Church of the Annunciation in Schüttorf was built in the neo-Gothic style from 1867 to 1868 and completed in 1868. At the School Museum, an interactive lesson in historical Sütterlin script provides an insight into the writing culture of earlier times.
The visitor attractions also include historical guided tours through the city led by the “Schüttorf Goat Woman”. Several raumsichten objects from the kunstwegen sculpture route are located in the collective municipality of Schüttorf. The 180-kilometre kunstwegen route is described as one of the largest freely accessible public museums in Europe.
The Vechte floodplain landscape in the Vechte valley includes meadows, pastures, hedges, reed and moorland areas, ponds and riverside woodland. The Vechte floodplains can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Quendorfer See has a sandy beach, beach volleyball and stand-up paddling. In the Quendorfer See recreational area, the dining facilities are located directly on the water.
The SchAu-Haus near the city centre is an open studio and offers workshops in painting, sculpture and upcycling. Schüttorf’s VECHTE BAD has children’s, sports and leisure pools, as well as an Aqua Bistro with an outdoor terrace.
The Grafschafter Fietsentour can be started in Schüttorf; regional circular tours or individual day tours are available. The kunstwegen Vechte Valley Route also runs through Schüttorf.
The Grafschafter Spurensuche network of hiking trails is marked with a magnifying-glass symbol. The Podagristen Main Trail is marked with yellow and red arrows.
